Voices for Power

Train-the-Trainer Project

Become a Community Energy Champion

Voices for Power aims to secure affordable and clean energy for all. Over the past four years, it has brought together migrant community leaders across religion, race, suburb and age, to work together for affordable clean energy.

In collaboration with a range of energy businesses, we launched the Voices for Power Train-the-Trainer Program where we will train migrant communities to be able to support their members to understand the energy system, read their bill and use energy more affordably and safely.

Our vision is to train a cohort of Community Energy Champions who can support and empower people in our communities to take charge of their energy and feel confident to participate in the energy system.

By having control of their energy use and building their understanding of the energy system, our communities will be empowered to have a stronger voice to advocate for transforming the energy system to provide clean, affordable energy for all.

Energy is becoming unaffordable for many members of our community.  Some report not understanding their bill or not feeling confident to negotiate a better deal. Many families are unaware of the hardship programs and government rebate schemes available to them. Finally, renewable energy and energy efficiency are too confusing for our communities to access. Therefore, many of our community disengage from the energy market, often sacrificing comfort or other necessities like food and medicine, just to pay their bills.

No matter our background or income, every deserves access to clean, affordable energy that keeps us comfortable, safe and protects the planet we love.

The energy system is rapidly changing because we need to mitigate the worse impacts of climate change. We need strong community voices to make sure that our communities’ needs are considered in the transition towards the future energy system.

We are leaning on the existing strength of our communities to make this project the best it can be. We are partnering with local community associations and religious organisations to train and empower community leaders to amplify our community’s urgent energy concerns.

Based on the deep listening and engagement with migrant communities over the past four years, Voices for Power have discerned that our communities prefer to receive information in their own language, from community leaders that they trust. By training community leaders, who already have deep relationships with their communities, with energy knowledge and workshop facilitation skills, we can equip our communities with the information and confidence they need to navigate the energy system.
