Why this matters

Minimum energy standards could help deliver:

  • Lower energy bills and cost-of-living relief

  • Healthier, safer homes during heatwaves and cold snaps

  • Lower emissions and practical climate action

  • Fairer outcomes for renters

The consultation results will inform the cabinet later this year, making this a strategic moment for strong community participation.

For too long, renters have been living in homes that are too hot in summer, too cold in winter, and too expensive to keep comfortable. Poorly insulated homes and inefficient appliances are driving up energy bills and making extreme weather harder to live through.

That can change.

Following a commitment secured at our State Assembly, the NSW Government has now opened public consultation on Minimum Energy Efficiency Rental Standards (MEERS) — a major opportunity to help shape whether stronger standards are introduced for rental homes across NSW.

The consultation is open to everyone

Whether you are:

  • A renter

  • A landlord or rentvestor

  • A housing, climate or social justice supporter

You can participate. Every submission helps show broad support for change; you don’t need to be an expert.
